Good to know
A silky oil for everyday moisture and massage
Body oil is one of the simplest ways to keep skin soft. Our Body Oil is a blend of high quality plant oils, vitamin E and essential oils, chosen to glide smoothly, sink in comfortably and leave skin looking healthy and moisturized. It works equally well as a daily after shower oil and as a massage oil, so one bottle covers both.
What makes it different
Many inexpensive body and baby oils are made almost entirely of mineral oil with added fragrance. We start with plant oils instead. Plant oils bring their own natural fatty acids and a richer, more skin friendly feel. Because the oil contains no water, it needs no synthetic preservatives.
Plant oil blend
The plant oils give the blend its slip and moisture. They spread easily over large areas and stay workable long enough for an unhurried massage.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps protect the oils from going stale and adds a conditioning touch.
Essential oils
A gentle amount of essential oils gives the blend a soft natural scent. Essential oils are potent, so we keep them well diluted. Our guide to essential oil safety and dilution explains why that matters.
What we leave out, and why
- Mineral oil: mineral oil and petrolatum are petroleum derived and do not offer the nourishing feel of plant oils.
- Synthetic fragrance: no parfum, which can hide many undisclosed ingredients.
- Phthalates: no phthalates, often used to help synthetic scents last.
- Parabens: no parabens. An oil with no water has no need for them.
Who it is for
The Body Oil is for anyone with dry or dull looking skin, people who prefer oils to lotions, and couples or massage therapists looking for a clean, simple massage oil. It is a good fit for people building a simpler, non toxic routine. If you have sensitive skin or nut allergies, check with your doctor and patch test first.
How to get the most from it
The best time to apply body oil is right after a bath or shower, while skin is still damp. Pat lightly with a towel, then smooth a small amount over arms, legs and torso. The water on your skin helps the oil spread thinly and feel lighter. For massage, pour a little into your palms and warm it before applying. Oils can make tubs and shower floors slippery, so step carefully and wipe surfaces afterward. Store the bottle away from heat and direct sunlight, and see our tips on storing natural products.
Questions about Body Oil
Is it better to put body oil on wet or dry skin?
Damp skin is best for most people. Applying oil right after bathing helps it spread thinly and hold in the moisture already on your skin. On dry skin, oil can feel heavier and take longer to absorb. Pat lightly with a towel first so you are not dripping wet.
Can I use body oil instead of lotion?
Yes, many people do. Body oil is concentrated and contains no water, so a little goes a long way. Some people prefer to layer a lotion and then a few drops of oil on very dry areas. Try oil on its own first and see how your skin feels.
Will body oil stain my sheets or clothes?
Any oil can mark fabric if you apply too much or dress right away. Use a small amount on damp skin and give it a few minutes to absorb before getting dressed. For massage, use a towel or older sheets underneath.
What is a good natural alternative to baby oil?
Most baby oils are mineral oil with added fragrance. A plant oil blend without synthetic fragrance is a common natural alternative for adults. For infants, ask your pediatrician first, since babies have delicate skin and essential oils are not recommended for very young children.

The story behind the ingredients

Mineral Oil and Petrolatum: Petroleum on Your Skin
Mineral oil and petrolatum are cheap, stable, and very good at sealing in moisture. They also come from petroleum. Here is a fair look at both sides.

Jojoba Oil: The Plant Oil That Mimics Skin's Own Sebum
Jojoba is not really an oil at all but a liquid wax from a desert shrub, and its structure resembles part of your skin's natural sebum. Here is why that matters.

Essential Oils: Benefits, Dilution and Safety
Essential oils bring scent and character to natural body care, but they are concentrated plant chemicals. Here is how to dilute them, which ones need extra care, and how they compare to synthetic fragrance.
