Made without

Hands that work, heels that walk, elbows that lean: our Body Balm is made for the busy parts of the body. Unrefined shea butter and vitamin E oil soften, while organic beeswax forms a breathable layer that helps lock in moisture.

A few antimicrobial essential oils round out the blend. There is no petroleum jelly, no mineral oil and nothing synthetic.

A balm for the hard working parts of you

Some skin needs more than a lotion. Knuckles after a day of chores, heels after a summer in sandals, elbows that lean on fence rails. Our Body Balm is a rich, simple balm made from just four ingredients: unrefined shea butter, beeswax, vitamin E oil and essential oils. There is no water in it, so there is nothing to dilute it and no need for the preservatives that water based lotions rely on.

What each ingredient does

Unrefined shea butter

Shea butter is the heart of the balm. Unrefined shea keeps more of its natural character, including its nutty scent, and it melts into dry skin to leave it soft and supple.

Beeswax

Beeswax gives the balm its body and forms a breathable layer on the surface of the skin that helps hold moisture in. It is what makes the balm last through hand washing better than a thin cream.

Vitamin E oil

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps keep the shea fresh and adds a conditioning feel.

Essential oils

A small amount of essential oils gives the balm a gentle, natural scent.

What we leave out

Who it is for

The Body Balm is made for very dry, rough or weathered skin: gardeners, ranch hands, nurses, cooks, hikers and anyone whose hands get washed many times a day. It is also lovely as an overnight balm for feet. If you have a tree nut allergy, talk with your doctor before using shea products, and as with any product, stop using it if irritation appears.

How to get the most from it

A balm is concentrated, so start small. Warm a little between your fingertips until it softens, then massage it into dry areas. It absorbs best on skin that is still slightly damp from washing. For rough heels, apply a thicker layer before bed and slip on cotton socks. For hands, work a small amount into knuckles and cuticles. Store the tin somewhere cool, since shea and beeswax soften in heat. If it melts in a hot truck, it is still fine to use once it sets again.

Questions about Body Balm

What is the difference between a body balm and a lotion?

Lotions are mostly water blended with oils, so they need emulsifiers and preservatives. A balm is made from oils, butters and waxes with no water, so it is richer and more concentrated. Balms stay on the skin longer and suit very dry spots, while lotions spread easily over large areas.

Is shea butter and beeswax good for cracked heels?

Many people find a shea and beeswax balm very helpful for dry, rough looking heels. Shea softens, and beeswax helps hold moisture in. Apply a generous layer at night and wear cotton socks. If cracks are deep, painful or bleeding, or if you have diabetes, see a doctor or podiatrist.

Is a balm with beeswax better than petroleum jelly?

Both form a layer on the skin that helps hold in moisture. Petroleum jelly is highly refined and works well for many people. Beeswax balms appeal to people who prefer plant and bee based ingredients, and shea adds a softening, nourishing feel that plain petrolatum does not offer.

Does shea butter go bad?

Yes, shea butter can slowly go stale over time, especially with heat and light. Signs include a sharp, sour or crayon like smell. Keep the balm closed, cool and out of direct sun, and use clean fingers. Vitamin E in the blend helps keep the oils fresh longer.
