Styles and conditions at the same time
Most pomades on the market fall into two camps: petroleum based greases that are hard to wash out, and water based gels full of polymers. Our Hair Pomade takes a simpler route. It is made from shea butter, hemp seed oil, avocado oil, vitamin E oil and essential oils. It gives a soft, natural hold with a healthy shine, and because it is made of butters and oils, it conditions while it styles.
What each ingredient does
Shea butter
Shea butter provides the body of the pomade. It gives a pliable hold that you can restyle through the day, and it softens hair as it sits.
Hemp seed oil
Hemp seed oil is a light, fast absorbing oil that adds shine without heaviness. It comes from the seed of the hemp plant and is a common skin and hair care oil.
Avocado oil
Avocado oil is rich and conditioning, which helps dry or coarse hair look smoother.
Vitamin E oil
Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps keep the oils fresh and adds a conditioning feel.
Essential oils
Pure essential oils lend a gentle herbal scent that fades through the day instead of announcing itself.
What we leave out
- No petrolatum or mineral oil, the base of many classic greasy pomades.
- No silicones that build up and leave hair limp.
- No synthetic fragrance and no synthetic dyes.
Who it is for
The Hair Pomade is for people who want a natural, touchable hold rather than a stiff, crunchy one. It suits short and medium styles, textured cuts, slicked back looks, flyaways, and beards that need taming. It is also a helpful finishing balm for curly and coily hair that likes extra moisture. Our guides to natural men's grooming and non toxic hair care cover how it fits into a simple routine.
How to get the most from it
Start with a small amount, about the size of a pea. Rub it between your palms until it melts and your hands look glossy, then work it through hair from back to front so the front does not get too much. On damp hair it gives a softer, more natural finish. On dry hair it gives more definition and hold. Add more a little at a time for a stronger hold. Because it is made from oils and butters, it washes out with a regular shampoo; very heavy use may need a second wash.
Questions about Hair Pomade
What is the difference between pomade and hair wax?
The terms overlap. Traditional pomades are oil or grease based with shine and a slick, reworkable hold. Waxes usually give a firmer, more matte hold. A natural butter and oil pomade sits in between, offering soft hold, a healthy sheen, and conditioning for the hair.
Is natural pomade hard to wash out?
Petroleum based pomades are notoriously hard to remove. A pomade made from plant butters and oils washes out much more easily with a regular shampoo. If you used a lot, shampoo twice and focus on the scalp and roots.
Can I use hair pomade on my beard?
Yes. A small amount of a natural butter and oil pomade can tame stray beard hairs and add a soft sheen. Warm it well between your palms, work it in evenly, and avoid heavy amounts near the mouth. Patch test if your facial skin is sensitive.
Does hemp seed oil in hair products contain THC?
Hemp seed oil is pressed from hemp seeds, which naturally contain little to no THC. It is used in hair and skin care for its conditioning, lightweight feel, and it is different from extracts made from the hemp plant's leaves and flowers.
